Katy Perry and her damned 'I Kissed a Girl' song annoy the hell out of me for all the reasons that more eloquent people than I have put forward. In my mind it's nothing more than another example of the whole T.A.T.U exploitation thing for the male gaze. "I'm such a bad girl - but I'm only doing it because I'm drunk, and I really love my boyfriend and ooh I hope he doesn't mind *wink wink*!!" UGH.
But then along comes Cobra Starship. They've covered the song and their version is pretty damn awesome. Put it this way - this wouldn't have become a world wide smash, which perhaps tells us something about Perry's target audience. Gabe Saporta's dark, sexy drawl and his lyrics ("I kissed a boy / just to start shit" (with the frat boys)) are much more honest. Plus, Gabe is very aware of slash and that shines through as well.
